Venator Robotics Roadmap
Updated: Apr 26
Heyo, it's been a while!
You may have noticed it's been several months since my last blog post, so I thought I'd make a quick update about what the deal is.
After several years of part-time work and evening college classes, this summer I finally got the qualifications I needed to attend University, which I just started in September. While this is a really exciting time for me, it unfortunately leaves little opportunity to build combat robots. All Venator Robotics projects have been halted during my studies so far, and sadly things may continue to stay that way during my first year. Maybe my situation will change in second year, but for the foreseeable future, expect some radio silence on my end.
That is, during term time, anyway.
What? You thought I'd go a whole year without building a new machine? No chance!
I get plenty of time off for Christmas and the summer, which translates to some convenient robot building time! To make the most of the breaks, I hope to follow these plans of action.
Thing 1 - Website Updates
This one isn't that big of a deal, but I do still plan to make changes to this website. If it's been a while since your last visit, you might notice the new Combat History Page, which details every single fight I've participated in, and the match results. I think it's pretty cool, if I may say so myself! I still haven't finished my event write up for the Championships 2019, but it's getting there - honest!
Thing 2 - Delay Omikron
It really pains me to say this, but Omikron will have to be postponed. The nature of the design is just too complex for me to build over the course of one holiday. It's also a bit of an untested area in the community - there are no guides on building battle-ready walkers, so I'll have to learn through my own experimentation. Now that I've started actually building the thing, I realise there are several flaws in the design I'd like to iron out.
But it is coming! Omikron will hobble it's way into the battlefield one day!
Thing 3 - New Beetleweight
I'll be building my first beetleweight during my time at home! Although Omikron is out of the picture for now, I still really want to get involved in the beetleweight scene. I haven't decided on a design yet, but I really want to make something unconventional. Stay tuned for that! I am attending the Battle in Burgh event this weekend, (shout out and thank you to Team Impact for lending me goodboi) which will be an excellent chance to get up close with some beetleweights and see how they're put together.
Thing 4 - Venators
I've realised that I won't get time to do a full-on new featherweight for the 2020 Championships, but I've come up with a solution! Venator V1 and V3 have always been significantly under the weight limit. In fact, they are conveniently just over 50% of the weight limit. With some slight modifications I reckon I could enter both of them as a multibot next year. Sounds like it would be complete chaos with two Venators running around the arena at once - perfect!
And that's basically my plan for the next year or so. It's been difficult to manage this website and university at once, but hopefully it won't be another 2 months until the next update. Cheers for reading, and stay tuned for progress on the new beetleweight!
